when you factor in newtown which the associated press actually labelled the number one story the year for the first time beating out a general election and the story that captivated us for the sadness and the tragedy of it all? >> well, i think the nra and. wayne lapierre was speaking to the constituency of the nra. he was careful not to say anything that would offend his own membership. secondly when he was speaking i was hoping that he would speak on behalf of the nra in a calm, constructive and sort of common ground way. but he missed his shot in this talk. instead of emphasizing some kind of positive proposal, he did towards the end of his talk mention this model school shield program which at least is an idea that can be discussed but instead of going right to that and offering it in constructive way he spends the first 15 minutes of his talk bashing the media, talking about the familiar whipping boys of violence in movies and in video games, et cetera and as you pointed out there's no particular correlation between those things and actual violence in society. >> professor,

[ bells ] >> church bells rang out in honor of those killed a week ago when a gunman burst into sandy hook elementary school. 20 children and six adults died at the school. the gunman also killed his mother and himself. governors in at least 29 states called for a moment of silence in honor of the victims. now the white house says president obama took part privately. also in newtown today, three more victims of the massacre are being laid to rest. yesterday funerals were held for three 6-year-olds and two teachers. it is a heartbreaking scene that has played out over and over again this week. the mother of the gunman adam lanza has also been laid to rest. a friend says nancy lanza was buried yesterday at an undisclosed location. >>> the gun control debate intensifying one week after that horror in newtown, connecticut, the killing of innocent children. just moments ago we heard from the national rifle association, executive director wayne l

tragedy from newtown, connecticut. david: people are afraid to go out and shop? >> they're not in the mood. one quote in an article talk people think it's better to spend time with family. shopper tracker is finding that people shopping for the week that ended december 15th down 4.3%. overall they've adjusted what they think the holiday seen will be. and they've adjusted that it will be a growth of 2.5%. and thought it would be 3.3%. national retail federation is keeping their prediction of growth 4.1%. real quick, i don't know if we have the graphic available. if you invest in retailer, boy have the on-line retailers done gang busters and even the shopper track survey even on-line wasn't performing as well as last year. overall this year for shopping, the on-line stock is doing much better. >> meanwhile, j.c. penney can we put up the stock chart, intraday what it's doing? it's up almost # 4% today. does that surprise you? >> the brick and mortar retailers are up for the year. the on-line retailer, theirs is up. and once again, amazons, ebays, these guys are doing extremely well. >> y
